Sandstone is a construction and decorative material that is naturally beautiful and durable, with a long history of use dating back to ancient times. The variety of its colors, patterns, and textures makes sandstone popular for use in architecture, as well as interior and exterior decoration. Its outstanding properties, including strength, weather resistance, and carveability, make sandstone a material that perfectly meets both aesthetic and functional needs.

What is sandstone

Sandstone is a type of sedimentary rock formed from the accumulation of small sand grains (0.0625 – 2 millimeters) over a long period. Natural cementing agents such as silica, calcium carbonate, or iron oxide bind these sand grains together until they become hard rock. The main component of sandstone is quartz, which is a strong and durable mineral. The color of sandstone varies depending on the type and amount of its mineral components, such as red, brown, yellow, gray, white, and so on.

Sandstone can be classified in several ways, depending on the criteria used for division. However, the most commonly used classification is based on the texture of the stone, which can be divided into 3 main types as follows:

  • Quartz Arenite: Its main component is more than 90% quartz. It is strong and highly durable, usually white or light-colored.
  • Arkose: It contains more than 25% feldspar. It often has a pink, red, or brown color due to the presence of iron oxide.
  • Greywacke: It is composed of quartz, feldspar, and other rock fragments. It has a coarse texture and is dark in color, often grey, green, or black.

Sandstone offers numerous benefits in both construction and decoration, as follows:

  • Construction Work: Used as a building material for structures, walls, barriers, columns, floors, paving walkways, and roads due to its strength, durability, and good load-bearing capacity.
  • Decorative Work: Used for interior and exterior building decoration, such as flooring, wall cladding, countertops, sinks, and stairs, owing to its natural beauty and diverse patterns.
  • Sculpture Work: Used for carving statues and monuments because it can be easily carved and yields beautiful details.
  • Landscaping Work: Used for garden decoration, creating pathways, ground cover, paving walkways, and building artificial waterfalls due to its harmonious blend with nature.
  • Abrasive Material: Some fine-grained types of sandstone can be used as an abrasive material.

When choosing sandstone, the following factors should be considered:

  • Purpose of Use: Select the type of sandstone appropriate for the job. For example, quartzitic sandstone is suitable for applications requiring high strength and durability, while arkosic sandstone is suitable for decorative work where color is desired.
  • Size and Format: Choose the size and format of the sandstone appropriate for the area where it will be used.
  • Color and Pattern: Select colors and patterns that match the decoration style.
  • Price: Compare prices from several stores to get a price that fits your budget.
  • Quality: Check the quality of the sandstone, such as its strength, density, color and pattern consistency, and any cracks.
  • Supplier: Choose a reliable and experienced sandstone supplier who offers good after-sales service.

Installation

  • Prepare the surface: The surface where the sandstone will be installed must be smooth, strong, dry, clean, and level.
  • Select laying materials: Choose a tile adhesive or mortar mix suitable for the type of sandstone and the installation area.
  • Lay the sandstone: Lay the sandstone according to the planned layout, leaving appropriate grout joints.
  • Grouting: After laying the sandstone, allow it to dry completely. Then, apply grout using a suitable grouting material.
  • Cleaning: Clean the sandstone surface after installation is complete.

Maintenance

  • Regular cleaning: Clean the sandstone surface regularly with plain water or a mild cleaning solution. Avoid using cleaning agents that are strongly acidic or alkaline.
  • Stain prevention: Seal the sandstone surface with a stone sealant to protect against stains and make cleaning easier.
  • Avoid scratches: Be careful to prevent scratches on the sandstone surface.
  • Repair cracks: If cracks are found, they should be repaired promptly to prevent them from widening.
