In today's interior design and decoration industry, surfacing materials play an extremely important role in creating beauty and functionality that meets modern lifestyle needs. Engineered stone has emerged as one of the top choices, gaining immense popularity due to its luxurious appearance, similar to natural stone, combined with durable properties and easy maintenance. This makes it suitable for a wide variety of applications, from kitchen countertops to wall decorations and furniture.

What is Engineered Stone

Engineered Stone is a man-made material produced to mimic the appearance of natural stone but with certain properties enhanced. Generally, it is manufactured by mixing natural stone powder (such as quartz minerals or other stone fragments) with a resin binder and synthetic pigments. This mixture is then subjected to a process of high pressure and temperature compaction, transforming it into stone slabs that are strong and durable. These slabs have very few or no pores, which gives them excellent properties in terms of cleanliness and stain resistance, often better than some types of natural stone. Furthermore, the color and pattern can be controlled for greater consistency than natural stone.

Popular types of engineered stone available in the market can be categorized as follows:

  • Quartz Stone: This is the most popular type. Its main components are finely ground natural quartz (approximately 90-95%) mixed with resin and pigments. Its key features include very high strength and durability, excellent scratch resistance, good heat resistance to a certain degree, and very low porosity, which prevents water and moisture absorption. It is highly suitable for kitchen countertops.
  • 100% Acrylic Solid Surface: This is made from acrylic resin mixed with natural minerals (such as aluminum trihydrate) and pigments. Its notable characteristics are its ability to be bent or curved when heated (thermoformable), the possibility of creating seamless joints, and its non-porous nature, making it hygienic. However, it is generally less resistant to scratches and heat compared to quartz stone. It is suitable for designs requiring continuity or free-form shapes, such as reception counters, washbasins, and decorative walls.
  • Polyester Solid Surface / Cultured Marble: This often contains polyester resin. It may be more affordable, but its durability and some properties might be inferior to the first two types.
  • High Durability: Especially quartz, which is very strong and resistant to everyday scratches and impacts.
  • Easy Maintenance: The surface is non-porous or has very minimal porosity, making it difficult for stains, water, and other liquids to penetrate. It's easy to clean with just a cloth dampened with mild soapy water.
  • Good Hygiene: The non-porous nature helps reduce the accumulation of bacteria and mold, making it suitable for areas requiring high cleanliness, such as kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Consistency in Patterns and Colors: Production can be controlled to achieve desired colors and patterns, simplifying the design of large areas that require continuity.
  • Design Versatility: A wide variety of colors, patterns, and textures are available. It can mimic the appearance of rare natural stones or create new, innovative designs.
  • Seamless (for Solid Surface): Sheets can be installed and joined smoothly and seamlessly, without visible joints. This is ideal for designs that require beautiful continuity.
  • Consider the application: If you require high scratch and heat resistance, such as for kitchen countertops, quartz stone is a suitable option. If you need curved designs, seamless joints, or are prioritizing aesthetics in areas that won't experience significant impact, Solid Surface might be a better fit.
  • Compare properties and prices: Different types, brands, and grades of engineered stone vary in price and characteristics. It's advisable to research and compare them thoroughly.
  • Select colors and patterns: You should request to see actual stone samples or large sample slabs (if available) to get the clearest view of the color and pattern, and consider how they will complement the overall decoration style.
  • Stone thickness: Standard thicknesses are typically around 12 mm or 20 mm, which affects both strength and price.
  • Choose reliable manufacturers and distributors: Opt for reputable brands with established production standards and product warranties to ensure quality and after-sales service.

Installation

  • Installation should be carried out by specialized technicians to ensure a standard, beautiful, and safe result.
  • Area measurements must be precise, and the supporting structure must be strong and level.
  • Joining seams (especially for Solid Surface) requires specific adhesives and techniques to achieve smooth, seamless joints.

Maintenance

  • General Cleaning: Use a soft cloth or sponge dampened with clean water or mild soapy water to wipe clean, then wipe dry.
  • Stain Removal: For stubborn stains, a specialized cleaner for engineered stone may be used according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Avoid using harsh abrasive cleaners such as toilet bowl cleaners or concentrated solvents.
  • Scratch Prevention: Although quartz stone is durable, always use a cutting board for chopping and avoid dragging hard or sharp objects directly across the surface. For Solid Surface, greater care should be taken regarding scratches.
  • Heat Protection: Always use a trivet when placing very hot cookware directly from the stove to prevent discoloration or damage from high heat (thermal shock).
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Be careful of contact with strong acidic or alkaline chemicals. If contact occurs, rinse immediately with clean water.
