Natural stone is a highly popular material for decoration due to its unique beauty and durability. Pattern stone, or jigsaw stone, has added a new dimension and interest to stone decoration by presenting the beauty of stone in diverse patterns. This helps create a distinctive and different atmosphere for any space, whether it's an interior or exterior area of a building.
Pattern stone is created by taking various types of natural stone, such as slate, sandstone, marble, or quartzite, and cutting them into pieces of predetermined sizes and shapes. These pieces are then arranged together to form beautiful designs or patterns. They may be attached to a mesh backing (mesh-mounted) for ease of installation. This results in pre-fabricated stone panels with continuous patterns that can be quickly and beautifully installed on floors or walls, similar to assembling a jigsaw puzzle.
Pattern stone is diverse, depending on the type of stone, cutting style, and arrangement. It can be broadly categorized as follows:
1. Categorized by Stone Type: For example, slate pattern stone, sandstone pattern stone, marble pattern stone, and quartzite pattern stone. Each type offers different colors, textures, and aesthetics.
2. Categorized by Arrangement Pattern:
- Random/Free Form: Uses irregularly shaped stones arranged together, creating a natural feel.
- Interlocking: Stone pieces have designed edges that fit snugly together, providing a neat appearance and easy installation.
- Linear/Stacked: Uses rectangular stones arranged in straight or staggered lines, offering a modern look.
- Mosaic: Uses small pieces of stone arranged into complex and beautiful patterns.
- Mixed: Combines stones of different sizes, colors, or types within the same panel.
- Outstanding Beauty: The patterns created by the arrangement of the stones generate visual interest and add dimension to surfaces, differentiating them from plain, large slab installations.
- Unique Character: Each piece of natural stone possesses its own distinct colors and patterns, making every sheet of pattern stone unique and one-of-a-kind.
- Ease of Installation: The design, with stones pre-adhered to a mesh backing, allows for easier and faster installation compared to manually arranging small individual stones on-site. This reduces errors and saves time.
- Durability: Natural stone is strong and resistant to weather conditions, scratches, and wear and tear from use.
- Versatile Use: Suitable for decorating both floors and walls, for interior and exterior applications, such as living room walls, headboard feature walls, waterfall walls, pathways, terrace floors, or decorative garden walls.
- Consider the application area: Select the type and pattern of stone that is suitable for the installation area. For example, stone with a rough surface is suitable for exterior floors to prevent slipping. Light-colored stone may not be suitable for kitchen walls where stains can easily occur.
- Choose a style that complements the design: Select stone patterns and colors that harmonize with the overall decoration style of the house or building.
- Inspect the stone quality: Check the consistency of color, size, and thickness of each stone slab. Verify that the adhesion to the mesh backing is strong.
- Calculate the quantity: Measure the area and calculate the number of slabs needed. It's advisable to order a small extra amount to account for damage or for cutting to fit corners.
- Consider the grout color: The grout color affects the overall aesthetic. Choose a color that matches or helps to accentuate the stone pattern.
- Purchase from a reliable source: This ensures the quality of the stone and the service.
Installation
- Surface Preparation: The floor or wall surface for installation must be smooth, clean, dry, and level.
- Mix Adhesive Mortar: Use adhesive mortar specifically designed for natural stone, mixed according to the specified ratio.
- Apply Adhesive Mortar: Use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive mortar evenly onto the surface.
- Install Stone Slabs: Press the pattern stone slabs onto the adhesive mortar, align them correctly, and tap gently to ensure firm adhesion. Leave grout joints as desired.
- Grouting: After the adhesive mortar is completely dry (approximately 24-48 hours), clean the joints and apply grout specifically for natural stone. Wipe off any excess grout immediately.
- Cleaning: Once the grout is completely dry, clean the stone surface again.
Maintenance
- Regular Cleaning: Dust or wipe with a damp, well-wrung cloth. Avoid using cleaning solutions that are strongly acidic or alkaline, as they can damage the stone surface. Use cleaning solutions specifically designed for natural stone.
- Sealing: Some types of stone (e.g., sandstone, marble) may require a sealant to protect against stains and algae, especially in outdoor areas or areas frequently exposed to water. Consult the supplier regarding the necessity and type of sealant.
- Prevent Scratches: Although stone is durable, avoid dragging hard or sharp objects across the stone surface.
Choosing pattern stone is a worthwhile investment for beauty and durability, helping to elevate your space, making it stylish and harmoniously close to nature.
